Blogs are a medium for persons or organizations to relay their thoughts, interests and opinions. They are mostly informal and they are usually updated frequently.
Non Profit Organizations (NGOs) can use blogs for external communication and for strengthening relationships with potential donors.
An NGO that has a blog would definately have an advantage over other NGOs since it would be relaying information to the potential donors by showing what the donations they received have done and what projects are in store for the future.
Since blogs can allow for readers to post comments then it is possible that potential donors would be able to provide feedback to the NGO with regard to the projects they deem important, appropriate and even ones which ought to be changed.
All this could potentially lead to higher donations from the potential donors.
Just like every coin has two sides, blogging has some disadvantages as well. Blogging would require maintenance and this would mean an addition in costs to the NGO. The time put in blog management is also a factor to be reckoned with.
The information provided on the blog could be acquired by any other organizations and used in forms not intended by the NGO.
Therefore even though using blogs is advantageous in alot of ways, one would be advised to navigate blog use cautiously. The same could be a said about the Internet!
